CHICAGO IRL definitely lucked out when creative co-conspirator Erik Peterson introduced Heather Marie Vernon to us interested in doing a performance for the launch party. The performance work Vernon does is constantly breaking boundaries and pushing the audience into a place of exquisite vulnerability. Sharkheart closed out the stage for the evening captivating everyone to silence and anticipation. Vernon has a command that has already caused an addiction for more.

Daviel Shy – SHY DONNIE & THE MUSCLES

I have retold this a few times, but when CHICAGO IRL contributor Daviel Shy approached us about doing a drag king number sweatin’ and workin’ to some Roy Orbison that she had been dreaming of doing for ages, we secretly squealed. Squeals of excitement could be hear through the bar that night as Shy Donnie and the Muscles took the stage, shovels in hand, fitted in some tantalizing overalls and showed us what it was like Working for the Man.

We hope this will not be Shy Donnie and the Muscles last performance, in the meantime I’ll get to editing some slow motion sequences from the tapes.

CHICAGO IRL contributor Erik Peterson’s last performance before the launch party was in 1993. When he comes back, he comes back big. SICK began with a figure in dress wearing a Mexican wrestling max and a blonde felt-like wig being wheel chaired through a heavily crowded bar, buzzing electronic beats filling the air while throwing confetti about everyone and shouting. Pushing the wheelchair in a cameo appearance was none other than performance artist Heather Marie Vernon.

There was not a single eye in the room that was not fixed on what was transpiring and for that we are ever eager to see more. In the meantime we will busy ourselves with absorbing more of Erik’s talented work.

Rebecca Kling – NO GENDER LEFT BEHIND

As busy as CHICAGO IRL contributor Rebecca Kling has been after writing and preparing for the tour of No Gender Left Behind we were ever more grateful when offered a sneak preview as the opening number at the launch party.

All we can say is if you are in one of the below touring cities fucking get in on it and tell all of your friends dammit! This one is not to be missed! It is rare we get the chance to listen to such an incredible, impeccably funny, intimate and relevant storyteller.
